Tower Bridge, London

Beautiful - Tower Bridge, London

London's Tower Bridge is one of the most recognizable bridges in the world.

Tower Bridge is a combined bascule and suspension bridge in London, over the River Thames.

It is close to the Tower of London, which gives it its name and has become an iconic symbol of London.

Construction started in 1886. It took 8 years, 5 major contractors and the relentless labour of 432 construction workers to build Tower Bridge.

On June 30th, 1894, the Tower bridge was opened by King Edward VII,  and his wife, The Princess of Wales.

The design of the Tower Bridge was done by Horace Jones and Wolfe Barry. Jones' engineer, Sir John Wolfe Barry, devised the idea of a bascule bridge with two towers built on piers.

Its Victorian Gothic style stems from a law that forced the designers to create a structure that would be in harmony with the nearby Tower of London.

Tower Bridge is 60 meters long with towers that rise to a height of 43 meters.

The bridge consists of two towers which are tied together at the upper level by means of two horizontal walkways which are designed to withstand the forces of the suspended sections of the bridge.

Over 40000 people use Tower Bridge every day.

The best reason for visiting the museum, though, is to get upon the tower top walkway – with splendid views across the River Thames.

The Sydney Harbour Bridge

The Sydney Harbour Bridge is one of Australia’s most well known

The Sydney Harbour Bridge is one of Australia’s most well known and photographed landmarks.

It is the world’s largest (but not the longest) steel arch bridge with the top of the bridge standing 134 meters (440 feet) above Sydney Harbour.

The Sydney Harbour Bridge, also affectionately known as the 'Coathanger', was opened on March 19th 1932 by Premier Jack Lang, after six years of construction.

The total cost of the Bridge was approximately 6.25 million Australian pounds ($A13.5 million), and was eventually paid off in 1988.

The contractors, under Director of Construction, Lawrence Ennis, set up two workshops at Milsons Point on the North Shore. Here, the steel (79% imported from England, 21% from Australian sources) was fabricated into girders etc.

the bridge was designed and built by British firm Dorman Long and Co Ltd of Middlesbrough. Because the steel expands or contracts depending on whether it is hot or cold the bridge is not completely stationary and can rise or fall up to 18 cm (7.1 inch).

The Harbour Bridge is an essential artery feeding traffic to and from Sydney. Below our traffic statistics and facts and figures.

Each of the 18,000 pieces used to build the tower was calculated specifically for the project and prepared in Eiffel's factory on the outskirts of Paris. The wrought iron structure is composed of four immense arched legs, set on masonry piers, that curve inward until joining in a single, tapered tower

Inaugurated March 31, 1889, the Eiffel Tower would be the tallest structure in the world until the completion of the Chrysler Building in 1930.
